Retegui, an Italian striker, will not play against Germany because of an injury
Italy’s football association (FIGC) announced on Wednesday that striker Mateo Retegui will miss both legs of their quarterfinal matchup with Germany in the UEFA Nations League due to a thigh injury.
Retegui, who was born in Argentina and currently plays for the Italian team Atalanta, leads Serie A in goals this season with 22. Since making his debut in 2023, he has scored six goals for Italy in 18 games.
“Striker Mateo Retegui, who underwent instrumental tests this morning for a muscle strain in his right thigh was assessed as unavailable for both matches against Germany and returned to his club for further evaluation,” a statement from the FIGC stated.
With 15 goals this season, Fiorentina’s Moise Kean is the second-highest scorer in the Italian league and manager Luciano Spalletti’s most likely pick to start in the starting lineup against Germany.
Italy’s opening leg against Germany is played Thursday at the San Siro, while the second leg is played on Sunday in Dortmund. In June, the Nations League semifinals and finals will be hosted by the tie’s victor.
