The Palmeiras Slam CONMEBOL denounces Luighi’s sanction for racism as mild
Palmeiras president Leila Mejdalani Pereira expressed that CONMEBOL’s punishment of Cerro Porteno for racial abuse against Palmeiras U20 player Luighi was insufficient, voicing her concerns about the South American governing body’s approach towards Brazilian clubs.
CONMEBOL imposed a $50,000 fine on the Paraguayan club and prohibited fans from attending their home games during the Libertadores U20 tournament. This decision came after an incident on Thursday when 18-year-old striker Luighi was visibly upset after a spectator in the stands directed racist gestures at the visiting Palmeiras players.
“It pains the spirit,” Luighi later expressed on Instagram. “Until when?” I sincerely hope that this question remains unasked in the future. For the time being, we continue to persevere.
Pereira described CONMEBOL’s punishment for Cerro as ridiculous.
“To begin with, I want to convey my strong disapproval regarding CONMEBOL’s penalty of $50,000 and the decision to close the gates,” she stated to TNT Sports on Monday.
If you arrive even a minute late to the pitch, the cost is $1,000. Lighting a flare will cost you $8,000. It is evident how CONMEBOL perceives the issue of racism. It’s ridiculous.
Pereira stated that Palmeiras, along with other clubs, has submitted a letter to FIFA, requesting the global governing body to take action in instances of racism.
“Luighi’s tears are painful… it’s hard to believe that anyone could remain unmoved by that boy’s sorrow… most Brazilian clubs have endured this type of crime,” she stated.
Pereira stated that Brazilian clubs have not received fair treatment from CONMEBOL, even though Brazil contributes 60% of the governing body’s revenue.
“We must implement decisive actions concerning CONMEBOL, as it is unacceptable for Brazil to generate 60% of CONMEBOL’s revenue while Brazilian clubs are treated in this manner,” she stated.
“I’d like to propose an idea… how about considering joining CONCACAF?”
“I believe that is the sole way to earn respect for Brazilian football, as it is currently not being honored by CONMEBOL.”
