Chiefs WR Xavier Worthy has been arrested but will not face charges in connection with the alleged assault

Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Xavier Worthy was arrested on Friday night in Texas on a charge of family domestic violence; however, the district attorney in Williamson County, Texas, announced on Saturday evening that he would not be pursuing charges.

The Austin American-Statesman has confirmed with district attorney Shawn Dick that, while officials will continue to assess the situation, the case has been “declined.”

“Following additional inquiries by the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office and further dialogue with a third-party witness, Mr. Worthy and his legal representatives, this case is currently being declined pending the conclusion of the investigation by the Williamson County Sheriff’s Office,” Dick stated to the American-Statesman.

According to jail records from Williamson County, Texas, Worthy was booked for assaulting a family or household member by obstructing their breathing or circulation. In Texas, the charge constitutes a third-degree felony, carrying a potential sentence ranging from two to ten years in prison, along with a fine that may not surpass $10,000.

According to Texas law, impeding breathing is defined as “intentionally, knowingly or recklessly impeding the normal breathing or circulation of the blood of the person by applying pressure to the person’s throat or neck or by blocking the person’s nose or mouth.”

The Chiefs stated on Saturday morning, according to NFL Network, “We are aware and gathering information.”

On Saturday, attorneys Chip Lewis and Sam Bassett released a statement asserting that Worthy is the victim of a “baseless allegation.”

“The complainant was recently requested to leave Mr. Worthy’s residence following the revelation of her infidelity,” the statement indicates. She has declined to comply and has made several coercive attempts before resorting to this unfounded accusation against Mr. Worthy.

“We will maintain our collaboration with the Williamson County authorities, as we have complete confidence that their comprehensive investigation will affirm Mr. Worthy’s innocence.”

The situation with Worthy marks the second consecutive offseason in which a Chiefs wide receiver has encountered issues off the field. In April, Rashee Rice was taken into custody due to his participation in a multi-vehicle accident while racing a Lamborghini in Dallas.

Worthy, 21, surged from the starting blocks and established a new NFL Scouting Combine record with an impressive time of 4.21 in the 40-yard dash. The Chiefs selected him with the 28th overall pick in the 2024 NFL Draft.

He recorded 59 receptions for 638 yards and six touchdowns, in addition to rushing for three more scores.

Worthy recorded three touchdown receptions during the playoffs, with two occurring in the second half of the Chiefs’ 40-22 loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX held in New Orleans.
