Trump Makes “Historic” Presidency Announcement in Angry Congressional Address
Trump declared, “In 43 days, we’ve accomplished more than most administrations have in four or eight years.”
Speaking to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday night, six weeks into his presidency, Donald Trump proclaimed his early term to be the most successful start to a presidency in US history.
As his Republican colleagues cheered, Trump declared, “We have accomplished more in 43 days than most administrations accomplished in four years or eight years, and we are just getting started.”
The address was full of audacious assertions and scathing criticisms of Trump’s political rivals, evoking his trademark rally style. Citing a purported shift in the national mood toward “pride” and “confidence,” he portrayed a revitalized America. He again boasted of his “massive” electoral triumph, drawing similarities to George Washington, the country’s first president.
Trump used the well-known speech to rattle off what he claimed was a long number of achievements. He praised the flurry of executive actions taken by his administration, including the US pulling out of international agreements he believed to be detrimental, freezing foreign aid, and cracking down on undocumented immigrants.
His ban on transgender athletes participating in women’s sports, which has generated intense controversy, was one of the most contentious regulations he brought to light. Additionally, he reiterated his administration’s resolve to rid the military and educational institutions of “woke ideology.”
“Trouble is wokeness.” It’s horrible to be awake. We feel so much better about it now that it’s gone, don’t we? His Republican allies cheered and laughed when he said that.
Democrats sat in dead quiet on the other side of the aisle. Many publicly expressed their disapproval of Trump’s remarks by holding up little black signs that said “false” and “lies.” But the president appeared to take pleasure in their unhappiness, taking advantage of the occasion to make fun of his critics.
He pulled out his notorious “Pocahontas” moniker for Senator Elizabeth Warren and smirked as he said, “It didn’t work out for them, did it?” in reference to people who had attempted to bring him to justice in a number of court cases.
However, longstanding Trump foe Al Green, a congressman from Texas, was not present in the chamber. Green has previously spearheaded attempts to impeach Trump during his first administration, however it was unclear why he missed the address.
With Trump displaying no intention in patching up his differences with Democrats, the speech foreshadowed what is expected to be a highly polarizing presidency. Rather, he strengthened his support base by portraying his actions as a direct attack on the “radical left lunatics” he holds responsible for the country’s problems.
Trump gave his trademark thumbs-up as he walked off the podium, reveling in the Republican cheers. Only a few weeks into his second term, he made it obvious that his administration was ready to move forward, whether or not bipartisan backing was forthcoming.
