A flood risk has forced the postponement of Villarreal’s match against Espanyol

Minutes after the game was supposed to begin, the home team announced that the La Liga match between Villarreal and Espanyol at La Cerámica had been postponed because of the possibility of flooding.

After the players warmed up and the lineups of both teams were confirmed, Villarreal announced that the game had been postponed.

“Due to the safety recommendations because of the risk of flooding as a result of the current weather conditions in Castellón, the Judge of Professional Competitions has decided to postpone today’s match between Villarreal CF and RCD Espanyol de Barcelona, which was scheduled to kick off at 9pm CET (2000 GMT),” Villarreal announced on X.

The teams and La Liga will have five business days to suggest a new time and date for the game, according to a statement from the Royal Spanish Football Federation.

After a fatal fire in the eastern coastal city in October, La Liga has already postponed games in Valencia.

With 44 points, Villarreal is in fifth place in the league. Three points above the relegation zone, in 15th place, is Espanyol.
