
Taurasi, the six-time Olympic champion and all-time WNBA scorer, retires
Diana Taurasi, a six-time Olympic champion, concluded one of the most illustrious basketball careers on Tuesday by announcing her retirement from the WNBA.
After leading UConn to three collegiate titles, the 42-year-old all-time top scorer won three championships during her 20 years with the Phoenix Mercury, who selected her first overall.
“Diana Taurasi is one of the greatest competitors to ever play the game of basketball on any stage,” an announcement from WNBA Commissioner Cathy Engelbert read.
“She has earned the unquestioned respect of players around the globe, delivered electrifying moments and captivated fans again and again.”
With 10,646 career points, Taurasi is the first basketball player to win six Olympic golds and about 3,000 more than Tina Charles, the next greatest scorer.
With her explosive play and incredible three-point shooting, the 11-time WNBA All-Star entered the league in its ninth season and immediately rose to prominence, helping it become a TV ratings sensation.
“Diana is the best player in the history of the game. In a statement, team owner Mat Ishbia stated, “I’ve always admired her; she is the best teammate and leader.”
Long the target of retirement rumors, Taurasi told Time magazine, opens new tab, she “just didn’t have it in me” anymore. Last summer, she became the oldest player to represent USA Basketball in an Olympics in Paris.
The two-time WNBA Finals MVP stated, “I’m just full, mentally and physically.” “I think that’s the best way to put it. I’m content and full.”
Current and former players showered the news with compliments, praising the five-time scoring champion’s aggressive style of play and perseverance on the court.
“Her legacy is unmatched,” Rebecca Lobo, a Hall of Famer, posted on social media.
“LEGEND. GOAT. WINNER,” All Star Angel Reese claimed. “Thank you DT.”
