Ferguson, the former captain, is named temporary manager of the Rangers

Rangers announced on Monday that they have replaced Philippe Clement as interim manager till the end of the season with their former captain, Barry Ferguson.

The day after second-place Rangers fell 13 points behind rivals Celtic in the Premiership rankings following a 2-0 home loss to St Mirren, Belgian Clement was fired on Sunday.

Ferguson, 47, held the position of interim coach at Blackpool in 2014 before playing for Rangers for two stints and leading the team to a domestic triple in 2002–03.

In addition, he has managed Alloa Athletic, Kelty Hearts, and Clyde.

“I want to wish Philippe every success in the future,” stated Patrick Stewart, the CEO of the Rangers franchise. “He is a fine man whom I have enjoyed working with in my short time here so far.”

“Barry is welcome to return to the club as well. We are grateful that he and his group took on the responsibility during this trying period.

Rangers lost the League Cup final to Celtic on penalties in December and were eliminated from the Scottish Cup by second-tier Queen’s Park this month, but Clement has led the team to the Europa League last 16 where they will play Fenerbahce next month.
