At the end of the season, Gasperini will depart from Atalanta
Atalanta coach Gian Piero Gasperini said on Saturday that he does not currently have any intentions to extend his contract with the Serie A team, although he would consider doing so until 2026.
Since taking over as coach in 2016, Gasperini has turned Atalanta’s fortunes around, transforming the team from a mid-table squad to a Champions League regular throughout his nine-year tenure.
Under the 67-year-old, Atalanta won the cup last season after defeating Bayer Leverkusen 3-0 in the Europa League final.
Gasperini’s contract has a one-year extension option and is scheduled to end in June 2025.
When asked if Atalanta, who now sit third in Serie A with 51 points after 25 games, would make it to the Champions League this season, Gasperini gave the following response to reporters:
“This could be the final one; I don’t have much time to accomplish it.
As said, there is a beginning and an end. We will determine at the end of the year whether to continue or cease; there will undoubtedly be no continuity.
“There won’t be any more continuity or renewal.”
Gasperini, who started his coaching career with Juventus’ youth squad, joined Atalanta after completing a second term as manager of Genoa.
Under Gasperini’s direction, Genoa was promoted to Serie A in 2007 following a 12-year break from the top league.
He has previously been a coach at Inter Milan and Palermo.
