Mexico Takes Steps To Boost Sovereignty Following US Cartel Terror Designation
President Sheinbaum of Mexico has suggested constitutional changes to preserve sovereignty in the wake of the United States designating Mexican cartels as terrorist groups.
Claudia Sheinbaum, the president of Mexico, declared on Thursday that she will put forward a constitutional amendment that would further protect Mexico’s sovereignty. This action comes after the Sinaloa Cartel and other Mexican drug cartels were designated as international terrorist organizations by the US.
During her daily morning news conference, Sheinbaum declared, “Interventions, intrusions, or any other action from abroad that are detrimental to the integrity, independence, or sovereignty of the nation… (including) violations of Mexican territory, whether by land, sea, or air.”
Mexican officials are concerned that President Donald Trump, who made the suggestion several times during his campaign, may be planning to launch a unilateral military operation within Mexico as a result of the US decision, which was announced on Wednesday. Mexico has long resisted the designation, and Sheinbaum stressed that the country was not consulted on it.
In contrast to other organizations on the US terror list, Mexican officials contend that the cartels are primarily profit-driven rather than politically motivated. International commercial ties may become more difficult as a result of the classification, especially for US corporations doing business in Mexico. Additionally, because migrants who are forced to pay cartels extortion or ransom may be accused of aiding terrorists, it may have an effect on US asylum petitions.
Sheinbaum offered a second proposal to strengthen punishments for arms trafficking by Mexicans and foreigners, in addition to the sovereignty-focused constitutional amendment. Since most firearms used in crimes in Mexico come from the United States, the country has been outspoken about the problem.
The aforementioned legislative actions demonstrate Mexico’s unwavering commitment to upholding its national sovereignty and combating transnational crime independently.
