The Niger Commission suggests a five-year shift to democracy, according to State TV

Following talks with national stakeholders, a panel in Niger, which is ruled by a military junta, has suggested a transition to democratic governance that would last at least five years, officials stated on state television on Thursday.

According to Abdoulaye Seydou, one of the commission’s vice presidents, “the duration of the transition is set at 60 months, which may change depending on the security situation” and other variables.

Political parties would be disbanded, according to Commission President Mamoudou Harouna Djingarey, who also stated that a new charter will permit two to five political parties.

As they fight extremist organizations, the Niger junta, like the military leaders in neighboring Mali and Burkina Faso, has expelled French and other European forces and turned to Russia for assistance since taking control in 2023.
