Trump-Inspired Political Party Launched by Australian Billionaire Clive Palmer Ahead of Election
A Trump-inspired party called the “Trumpet of Patriots” has been founded by Clive Palmer, who promises to “drain the swamp” before Australia’s federal election.
The Trumpet of Patriots is a new political party that Australian mining tycoon Clive Palmer has founded, claiming that it was inspired by US President Donald Trump. The news was made just a few months before Australia’s next federal election.
Echoing Trump’s vow to cut government, Palmer said at a press conference on Wednesday that his party would try to “drain the swamp” in Canberra. Palmer said, “We think Donald Trump has been very effective in reducing public expenditure.”
The Trumpet of Patriots has adopted a right-wing attitude that is consistent with Trump’s goals, opposing mass immigration and recognizing just two genders. Palmer stated that the party would run in the next election for both the Senate and all 150 lower house seats.
With a net worth of $2.1 billion, Palmer is the 18th richest person in Australia. From 2013 to 2016, he was the leader of the United Australia Party (UAP) and a lower house politician. Even though UAP spent A$100 million ($63.52 million) on its campaign, the party only won one Senate seat in the most recent federal election.
In time for this year’s election, which must take place by May, Palmer failed to register UAP. A recent interest rate decrease that may help the government in light of cost-of-living concerns has led to speculation that Prime Minister Anthony Albanese may announce a date as early as March.
