The US authorizes the extradition of a suspect in the 2008 Mumbai attack to India
A suspect in the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, which claimed the lives of over 160 people, has been granted extradition by the US.
A suspect connected to the 2008 Mumbai terrorist bombings, which claimed the lives of over 160 people, has been granted extradition by the US. During a joint news conference with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi at the White House on Thursday, US President Donald Trump made the announcement.
In reference to the terrible 2008 Mumbai terrorist assault, Trump said, “I am happy to announce that my administration has approved the extradition of one of the plotters and one of the very evil people of the world to face justice in India.” “Therefore, he will return to India to face justice.”
Trump did not officially identify the suspect, but a joint statement from both nations later named him as Tahawwur Rana, a Canadian citizen and businessman of Pakistani descent from Chicago. India blames the assaults on Lashkar-e-Taiba, an Islamist organization located in Pakistan, which Rana has been suspected of supporting.
The government of Pakistan has denied any role in the tragedy.
166 people were killed in the three-day assaults, which started on November 26, 2008, and targeted a number of places, including upscale hotels, a train station, and a Jewish center.
Trump was also questioned about Sikh separatists living in the United States at the press conference. India has classified these individuals as security concerns since they want to establish an independent Khalistan state. Trump underlined that the US and India are working together on issues pertaining to crime, but he did not explicitly answer the question.
Tensions between the US and India have existed since 2023 as a result of India’s suspected targeting of Sikh separatists in the US and Canada. When Washington accused a former Indian intelligence official in relation to a thwarted murder attempt on a Sikh separatist leader in the US, the situation became more heated. India has said that it is looking into the claims.
The US and India’s counterterrorism cooperation has advanced significantly with Rana’s extradition, further solidifying their diplomatic relationship.
