Sabrina Ionescu and Stephen Curry’s 3-point rematch is off
This weekend’s NBA All-Star Game will not include a replay of Stephen Curry and Sabrina Ionescu’s wildly famous 3-point shootout.
Ionescu of the New York Liberty and Curry of the Golden State Warriors alluded to a potential rematch following Curry’s 29-26 victory in Indianapolis in February.
Last-minute attempts to reschedule the event were unsuccessful, as announced Thursday.
All-Star weekend starts on Friday and ends on Sunday at Chase Center in San Francisco, which is both Ionescu’s home area and Curry’s home court.
“We failed to come up with a strategy that we believed would improve upon the memorable event from the previous year. According to The Athletic, NBA spokesperson Mike Bass stated, “We all decided not to move forward and will instead keep the focus on All-Star Sunday’s new format.”
According to the story, Curry and Ionescu wanted to include Caitlin Clark of the Indiana Fever and maybe Curry’s old colleague Klay Thompson since they weren’t interested in another one-on-one match.
However, Clark said in a statement last month that she preferred to make her 3-point competition debut this summer during the WNBA All-Star activities held on her home floor in Indianapolis.
The NBA’s desperate attempt to entice Curry and Ionescu to compete on Wednesday failed, according to The Athletic.
NBA commissioner Adam Silver may have been shocked by the loss of the rematch because he hinted at Part II in an interview with reporters in Mexico City in November.
Silver reportedly stated, “They know they’re going to be doing this again,” according to The Athletic. “They’re anticipating it. I believe they stated, “We need more than one round,” as soon as they left the court following the tournament the previous year. We will thus be doing more.”
The 36-year-old Curry, a four-time NBA champion, leads the league in 3-point attempts and makes with a career shooting percentage of 42.4 percent. During her first five WNBA seasons, 27-year-old Ionescu had a 36.4 percent 3-point shooting percentage.
