Sweden’s government says it will strengthen school security following the horrific massacre
The government announced on Wednesday that all Swedish schools and pre-schools will be required to establish measures to prevent unauthorized individuals from entering their premises. This decision is being made in response to the most severe school shooting in Swedish history, which occurred last week.
Before the suspected perpetrator, Rickard Andersson, a 35-year-old Swedish recluse, turned a weapon on himself, ten individuals were shot dead at the Campus Risbergska school in Orebro, according to a Reuters source and Swedish media.
The assault has prompted inquiries regarding the necessity of enhancing security measures at Swedish institutions. In contrast to numerous other nations, schools are typically perceived as semi-public spaces with minimal restrictions on entry and exit.
Johan Pehrson, the Minister of Education, stated at a news conference that all schools and pre-schools would be required to establish a plan to prevent unauthorized individuals from entering.
For instance, he suggested that it could entail an entry registry, controls, and a locking system with locked entrances. However, he also stated that it was the responsibility of individual institutions to determine the most suitable solution for their needs.
Witnesses have described the Campus Risbergska shooter as entering the school with a hunting rifle and two shotguns in a “guitar-shaped box” prior to commencing his shooting.
Marwa, who declined to disclose her full name, survived the assault and rendered assistance to a fellow student. However, she expressed her uncertainty regarding her intention to return to the institution to complete her nursing education.
She stated to Reuters, “I truly do not believe so.” “They must take action.” It is truly peculiar that an individual can enter with armaments of that nature without anyone noticing.
Additionally, the government will expedite the implementation of legislation that would facilitate the installation of surveillance cameras in schools without the need for permission and would allow personnel to examine luggage.
Additionally, Sweden’s right-wing government declared last week that it would endeavor to strengthen gun regulations in light of the fact that the perpetrator appeared to have employed numerous rifles that were personally licensed.
