A humbled Mahomes admits to his heartbreaking Super Bowl loss and promises to use it as inspiration
Arriving in New Orleans, Patrick Mahomes had his sights set on the past. In an attempt to lead his Kansas City Chiefs to a historic third straight Super Bowl, the NFL’s creative genius was bidding.
However, following a wild night in the Superdome, he was forced to face the brutal loss to the Philadelphia Eagles and make a commitment to utilize this most agonizing of defeats as motivation for future victories.
Rather than being the mastermind behind a historic triumph, Mahomes was suffocated throughout by the Eagles’ massive defense.
When the game ended as a match, the Chiefs were greatly flattered by the 40–22 result. Afterwards, Mahomes did not hesitate in either win or loss.
The 29-year-old quarterback, who won MVP the previous season, claimed full credit for the Bayou blowout.
“They scored right away after I threw two interceptions in their end, including a pick-six and a pick that they recovered to the five-yard line. He said to reporters gathered around him in the bowels of the enormous stadium, “So, you give the team 14 points, especially a really good football team, a Super Bowl football team, and not a lot of good things happen.”
BLOWOUT BAYOU
I placed us in a difficult situation there, which is why I feel responsibility for this defeat more than I probably have for any other loss in my career.
“I need to become better at not giving up because even though we had some impressive numbers at the end of the game, they didn’t really matter since we kind of lost the momentum as a team.
When things aren’t going my way, have faith in my defense and the rest of my squad to get those stops until I can determine what our offensive strategy should be.”
No one could have foreseen how lopsided this championship game would be, and even as the stadium’s red-clad supporters watched in disbelief as the Eagles scored one goal after another, Mahomes maintained that he had remained optimistic.
“I mean, we were confident until the very end,” he stated. “I mean, there have been some insane incidents in the NFL. However, all you can do is give it your all and take things one play at a time. And I’m proud of our men for overcoming hardship to do it.
It’s likely that many teams would have given up and folded. It clearly didn’t go our way, but we persisted in battling to the very end. And throughout the remainder of our careers, we will reflect on that. However, I’m proud of the battle those men fought.
According to Mahomes, the Eagles outperformed the Chiefs in every facet of the game. “And when I compile it with mistakes, then it turns into a big lead and we end up getting a blowout,” he stated. “As I already stated, I’m simply pleased of the lads and their competitive spirit.
“And it was something that we’ll think about for the rest of our careers and hopefully motivate us to be even better.”
