After several earthquakes, Greece declares a state of emergency in Santorini
Santorini has been placed under a state of emergency until March 3 by Greece after several earthquakes caused locals to leave.
The well-known tourist island of Santorini in Greece has been placed under a state of emergency after several earthquakes rocked the area this week. As officials warn of possible landslides and continuous seismic activity, almost 10,000 people and employees have been evacuated.
The water between the neighboring island of Amorgos and Santorini has been experiencing hundreds of shocks since Sunday. On Wednesday night, the most powerful earthquake, with a magnitude of 5.2, occurred.
Due to safety concerns, officials have since closed schools, sent rescue crews, and warned locals to avoid ports and indoor gatherings.
The Greek Army, police, and fire department have all been sent to Santorini to help with emergency response. According to the Ministry of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, the state of emergency will last until March 3 in order to attend to the needs of the populace and lessen the effects of the continuous seismic activity.
Despite being one of the most earthquake-prone nations in Europe, seismologists have called the present seismic activity exceptional. For weeks or perhaps months, they warn, the tremors may persist.
One of the biggest volcanic eruptions in history occurred approximately 1600 BC, forming the island of Santorini, which is famous for its striking cliffs and white-washed structures. The island is especially susceptible to seismic activity due to its geological past, which raises worries about the possibility of more disturbances.
