Tems from Nigeria Wins a Second Grammy for Best African Music Performance

With her uplifting single, “Love Me Jeje,” Nigerian singer Tems won the coveted Best African Music Performance category, earning her second Grammy.

Burna Boy (Higher), Asake and Wizkid (MMS), Chris Brown (Sensational), Davido and Lojay (Tomorrow), and Yemi Alade (Tomorrow) were among the top African artists defeated by the award-winning performer.

Taking to the podium to give an emotional acceptance speech, Tems was overcome with appreciation. She thanked her management and colleagues, saying, “Dear God, thank you so much for putting me on this stage.” Her mother, who joined her on stage for the time, also received an emotional homage from her.

Love Me Jeje honors the heritage of Nigerian music by referencing pop pioneer Seyi Sodimu’s iconic 1997 single of the same name.

Tems has now won two Grammys. In 2023, she won Best Melodic Rap Performance for her appearance on Future’s WAIT FOR YOU, which included Drake and notably sampled her song Higher.
