One Love: The Best Reggae Album Award Honors Bob Marley’s Legacy
At the 67th Annual Grammy Awards on Sunday, the soundtrack of Bob Marley: One Love (Music Inspired by the Film) won the coveted Best Reggae Album title.
The 10-track album, which was released by Island Records in February 2024, includes modern covers of some of Marley’s best-known songs, such as Natural Mystic, Exodus, Waiting in Vain, Three Little Birds, One Love, Redemption Song, and Is This Love.
Marley’s grandson Skip Marley, Grammy-winning Canadian R&B performer Daniel Caesar, country music icon Kacey Musgraves, Nigerian phenomenon Wizkid, singer-songwriter Jesse Reyez, and soul musician Leon Bridges are some of the musicians that contributed their voices to this tribute album.
Bloody Civilian, a Nigerian musician, also worked on the project, giving Marley’s classic sound a contemporary twist.
In the Best Reggae Album category, the album defeated a formidable field of contenders, including Party with Me by Vybz Kartel, Evolution by The Wailers, Never Gets Late Here by Shenseea, and Take it Easy by Collie Buddz.
Despite never having received a competitive Grammy during his lifetime, Bob Marley’s legacy has been recognized posthumously with a number of Grammy awards and honors. He received the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2001. Several posthumous accolades, such as Best Reggae Album for compilations showcasing his classic songs, further solidified his impact.
The movie Bob Marley: One Love delves at the life and legacy of the Jamaican reggae legend, emphasizing his ascent to global fame and his contribution to utilizing music to advance peace.
