Zari Hassan: Tanasha is too much of a good girl, while Zuchu is too feisty
Zari talks about her marriage in Season 3, the authenticity of Young, Famous, and African, and her opinions on possible cast members like Zuchu and Vera Sidika. She also jokingly dismisses Tanasha Donna as being “too reserved” for the show.
As the Brand Ambassador for East Africa since her nomination last year, 44-year-old Ugandan socialite, entrepreneur, and reality TV star Zari Hassan was recently in Kenya for a Samsung campaign. The actress is well-known for dating Tanzanian artist Diamond, with whom she has two children, and for participating in the reality show Young, Famous, and African. She lives and works in South Africa.
In today’s world, women are taking over roles that males formerly believed women would never occupy. For me, this is demonstrated by my transformation from a socialite to a businesswoman.
One incentive is being able to operate a fully functional company that has been approved by the South African government. I used to respect women who rose from nothing to prominence, such as Viola Davis and Oprah Winfrey, to name a couple.
I will always say this to the young ladies who look up to me: social life is great, you know, the lifestyle of a socialite, but what comes next? You have to solve this. I needed a job, so I started my own business to fill that need.
Being a mother is my finest accomplishment because I believe it’s one of my strongest suits. However, having a foreign-owned company that is officially recognized by the government and being a successful business owner in a nation like South Africa, where xenophobia is rampant, is also a source of pride.
When people look at Zari, they only see the final product; they don’t consider my background or my journey. I came from nothing, from the UK’s floods and frauds. I’ll tell it again and again: I was a maid once, striving for the top.
Some people are fortunate enough to avoid the process of rising to the top, while others had to put in a lot of effort to accomplish so. I used to work as a tea waitress and perform some cleaning in an office. You must always begin someplace.
My family comes before everything else, including business. Since kids will always be here, it is my first priority.
Having raised my boys from an early age as a single mother following the death of their father, I am happy to see them become entrepreneurs. I did a wonderful job of observing the discipline in them despite being exposed to a lot of material possessions, wealth, and luxury when they were small. My boys are well-behaved and maintain their humility.
African, Young, and Famous is not as predetermined as most people believe. It is what it is. I got married before the third season, so it had to be in the show. Since Shakib was now officially my husband, I had to present him to the group as a new member.
Vera Sidika is a Kenyan celebrity that can contribute to the show. She is able to unleash a few punches and bring the nyash. She resembles us. I don’t see anyone from Tanzania; they love gossip and aren’t as emotional as we are.
I don’t think udaku can work on Young, Famous, and African; Tanzanians simply like it. However, I’d really like to see Zuchu cast. She is fiery, and if she were on the show, I think she might stir things up a bit. Even though I talk to Tanasha frequently and we FaceTime with our kids, I don’t think she’ll be able to make it to Young Rich and Famous. She would be a misfit because she is such a good kid who is so quiet.
