Elon Musk Aides Block US Agency Workers From Computer Systems, Sources Claim
There have been allegations that Elon Musk’s assistants have prevented government workers from using computer systems at a US agency.
Elon Musk’s aides, who are in charge of reorganizing the US government’s human resources department, have reportedly prevented career civil servants from accessing important computer systems that include the personal information of millions of federal workers, according to two agency officials.
Hundreds of public officials have been fired or marginalized by President Donald Trump since he took office 11 days ago in an attempt to reduce the size of the federal government and appoint more loyalists.
Musk, the billionaire owner of X and CEO of Tesla, has acted quickly to reorganize the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) in order to fulfill his goal of cutting the number of civilian government employees, which now stands at 2.2 million. Some top career staff at OPM have had their access to vital data systems withdrawn, according to the two officials, who spoke anonymously out of concern for consequences.
The Enterprise Human Resources Integration database is one of the restricted systems; it contains sensitive data such as Social Security numbers, birth dates, home addresses, pay grades, appraisals, and length of service of government workers.
One official stated, “We don’t have any idea what they’re doing with the computer and data systems.” That is raising serious concerns. No oversight occurred. It has actual ramifications for cybersecurity and hacking.
Affected officials may still use email and other basic features, but they are no longer able to access the vast statistics that cover every facet of the federal workforce. Requests for comment from the White House, OPM, Musk, and the new team were not immediately answered.
In a rare move, OPM has deviated from its customary formal communications by sending out memoranda urging public personnel to think about buyout offers and utilize the funds for a “dream destination” trip.
According to Professor Don Moynihan of the Ford School of Public Policy at the University of Michigan, the events at OPM raise questions regarding congressional oversight and the administration’s handling of the federal bureaucracy.
“Anyone outside of Musk’s inner circle at OPM finds it much more difficult to understand what’s going on,” Moynihan stated.
