The president of Colombia urges undocumented migrants in the United States to return home “immediately”

President Gustavo Petro of Colombia called on undocumented Colombians working in the United States to resign “immediately” and go back to their country on Friday.

President Gustavo Petro of Colombia has urged undocumented Colombians in the US to quit their work “immediately” and go back to their own country.

Petro promised returnees in a post on X (previously Twitter) on Friday that the Department of Social Prosperity will offer them financial assistance through credit programs to facilitate their reintegration into Colombian society.

His remarks follow a recent disagreement between the two nations over deportation flights, during which the Colombian air force is still transporting deportees from the United States to Bogotá.

A possible economic catastrophe was avoided when Petro’s government and US authorities came to an arrangement earlier this week. Due to the disagreement, both countries threatened to impose trade sanctions, and the US even restricted some Colombian officials’ access to visas.
