Super Bowl security will be reviewed by a congressional delegation: report
Following a New Year’s Day attack in the city that left 14 people dead and numerous others injured, a congressional delegation will travel to New Orleans on Friday to assess security before the Super Bowl on February 9, according to Axios.
According to the news outlet, which cited a panel spokeswoman, Alabama Representative Dale Strong, who chairs the House Homeland Security Subcommittee on Emergency Management and Technology, will lead the group.
A request for comment was not immediately answered by Strong’s office.
According to reports, the congressmen will accompany representatives from the FBI, New Orleans police, and the Department of Homeland Security to the attack scene.
Following their tour of Caesars Superdome and the city’s convention center, they will receive briefings from NFL and law enforcement representatives.
After a U.S. Army veteran crashed a truck into a group of partygoers in the city’s well-known French Quarter neighborhood early on January 1, the NFL said this week that they had changed their security measures, including increasing the number of law enforcement officers.
Shamsud-Din Jabbar, 42, who had sworn loyalty to the Islamic State extremist organization, acted independently, according to the FBI.
On Wednesday, NFL Chief Security Officer Cathy Lanier informed reporters that there would be “thousands” of law enforcement officers working across federal, state, and local agencies.
According to Lanier, since January 1, no credible threats have been made regarding the event.
Checkpoints will be set up throughout the French Quarter, according to Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry, who this week extended the state of emergency imposed following the attack on New Year’s Day.
According to Lanier, the city received additional state resources as a result of the declaration of emergency.
