President of Mexico to Google: Trump’s renaming of the Gulf of Mexico is incorrect
After U.S. President Donald Trump ordered the Gulf of Mexico to be renamed the “Gulf of America,” Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated Thursday that Google (GOOGL.O) opened a new tab and was incorrect to change the name of the body of water on its Google Maps platform.
Sheinbaum shared a letter from her government to Google, arguing that the United States cannot unilaterally change the name of a body of water that it shares with Mexico and Cuba.
Google made the change after announcing on Monday that, once the U.S. Geographic Names System is formally revised, Google Maps would rename the “Gulf of Mexico” to “Gulf of America” for users in the United States.
It will still be known as the “Gulf of Mexico” in Mexico, but the shift will be noticeable in the United States. Google Maps users will see both names outside of the two nations.
Trump and Sheinbaum have argued over the name change; the Mexican president has previously joked that if nations were beginning to rename things, then maybe North America should be called “Mexican America” in reference to a 1607 map of the region.
The United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea stipulates that a nation’s sovereign territory can only extend up to 12 nautical miles (about 22 kilometers) out from the coastline, hence Mexico claims the United States cannot lawfully change the name of the Gulf.
“[The name change] could only correspond to the 12 nautical miles away from the coastlines of the United States of America,” Sheinbaum stated during her recurring morning press briefing after reading the letter.
Mexico requested that Google show the map of Mexican America in a prominent location, Sheinbaum continued.
“We ask that when you put Mexican America in the search engine, the map appears that we presented.”
