The discovery of over 100 dead dolphins on the Somali coast raises questions
Officials have not yet determined the cause of the deaths of more than 100 dead dolphins discovered on the shore of the semi-autonomous Puntland area of Somalia.
Abdirisak Abdulahi Hagaa, the region’s fisheries minister, told Reuters that samples had been taken to attempt to determine what happened and that at least 110 dead dolphins had been recorded thus far, not far from the port of Bosaso.
He said that officials did not think poisonous chemicals were to blame because fish in the region did not seem to have been impacted. “At this time, we know their death was not caused by wounds from nets because there were no wounds or cuts on them,” he said.
Soldiers and locals came to observe the gruesome scene while holding their noses due to the stench of the corpses.
