Raiders will hire Pete Carroll as head coach, according to reports

Several media sites announced Friday that Pete Carroll will be the next head coach of the Las Vegas Raiders.

Carroll accepted a three-year contract with a four-year team option, according to ESPN. According to NFL Network, the Raiders have told other possible candidates that Carroll will be their new head coach.

Carroll will rekindle his long-running feud with Los Angeles Chargers head coach Jim Harbaugh by joining the AFC West. While Carroll was working the sidelines for the Seattle Seahawks, the latter was the coach of the San Francisco 49ers.

Carroll, 73, has the most victories of any Seahawks coach (137) and won a Super Bowl during his 14-year career with the team. In addition, he broke the franchise’s records for the most playoff appearances (10), and victories (10). After the 2023 season, Carroll and team management decided it was time for a coaching change, and Carroll served as an adviser in 2024.

Carroll has a 170-120-1 record as an NFL head coach and has coached the New York Jets (1994) and New England Patriots (1997-99).

In his nine years at Southern California, he finished with a 97-19 record and won two national titles, demonstrating his excellence in the collegiate ranks. Only three coaches, including Carroll, have won both a college national title and a Super Bowl.

Two days after finishing a 4-13 season, the Raiders sacked head coach Antonio Pierce on January 7.

Pierce, 46, coached for 1 1/2 seasons with a 9–17 record. After Josh McDaniels was fired in the middle of the 2023 season, he initially took over as head coach on an interim basis.

Carroll joins a group of AFC West coaches who have won championships.

At Michigan, Harbaugh earned a national championship. Andy Reid is attempting to win a fourth Super Bowl this season after leading the Kansas City Chiefs to three victories. After the 2009 season, Denver’s head coach, Sean Payton, won the Super Bowl with the New Orleans Saints.
