In 2025, struggling soccer team Dortmund fires coach Sahin following a four-game losing streak
The German soccer team announced on Wednesday that Borussia Dortmund had sacked coach Nuri Sahin following Tuesday’s shocking 2-1 Champions League loss to Bologna, which extended their losing streak to four games in all competitions.
“Borussia Dortmund have released head coach Nuri Sahin with immediate effect following an internal analysis of recent sporting developments,” the club announced in a statement.
The Champions League finalists from the previous season, the Ruhr Valley team, took the lead in the 15th minute but let up two goals in two minutes in the second half against the Italians.
They also dropped to 10th position in the Bundesliga after losing all three of their 2025 league games, endangering their chances of competing in Europe’s top club competition the following season.
The statement said, “After four straight losses and just one victory in the last nine games… we have unfortunately lost faith in being able to achieve our sporting goals in the current constellation,” stated Lars Ricken, managing director of Dortmund.
“This decision also hurts me personally, but it was no longer avoidable after the game in Bologna.”
Dortmund’s league matchup against Werder Bremen on Saturday will be coached by current Under-19 coach Mike Tullberg.
The 36-year-old Sahin departs the team little over six months after being named the new coach to succeed Edin Terzic.
The German-born former Turkey international played for the team as a young player and as a senior. After managing Antalyaspor in Turkey for two years, he joined Dortmund as an assistant coach in 2024. His contract was set to expire in 2027.
