WHO hopes that the US will think again about its plan to pull out

Soon after US President Donald Trump signed an order to start the withdrawal of the United States from the World Health Organization (WHO), the agency expressed its disappointment about this decision.

Trump was inaugurated as the 47th US president on Monday, starting his second term after four years away from the White House.

The UN agency highlighted that it is very important for keeping people around the world, including Americans, healthy and safe. It works on solving the causes of diseases, improving health systems, and responding to health emergencies, like disease outbreaks, even in risky areas where others can’t go.

The United States helped create the World Health Organization (WHO) in 1948 and has been involved in its activities ever since, working with 193 other countries. This includes being active in meetings like the World Health Assembly and the Executive Board, according to Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the Director-General of WHO.

“For over seven decades, WHO and the USA have saved countless lives and protected Americans and all people from health threats.

We have worked together to eliminate smallpox, and now we are close to eradicating polio. American organizations have both helped and gained from being part of the WHO (World Health Organization).

The World Health Organization (WHO), with the help of the United States and other partner countries, has made significant changes over the past seven years to improve how they are accountable, efficient, and successful in the countries they serve. They stated that this work is still ongoing.

“We hope the United States will reconsider its decision, and we look forward to having positive discussions to keep the partnership between the USA and WHO strong, which will help the health and well-being of millions of people worldwide.”
