Chicago Immigration Raids Are Reconsidered by the Trump Administration Following a Leak
The Trump administration is reevaluating its planned immigration raids in Chicago following the release of information.
Following the disclosure of information on the operations, Tom Homan, Trump’s “border czar” and former acting director of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), said the new administration of President-elect Donald Trump is reevaluating plans for immigration raids in Chicago and other cities. In a Saturday interview with “The Washington Post,” Homan revealed this.
Homan stated, “A decision has not yet been made by the new administration.” “This leak is being examined, and a decision will be made accordingly.”
In response to inquiries about the possible raids, ICE has not yet provided a response.
Officials and immigration rights activists had expected the Trump administration to begin broad enforcement proceedings in many US cities soon after Trump’s inauguration on Monday.
Specifically, Chicago was seen as a top target.
According to Dulce Ortiz, head of the Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights, up to 200 ICE officers are anticipated to start raids in the Chicago region Monday at 5 a.m. The purpose of these activities, according to reports, was to stop people while they were beginning their day or traveling to work. Enforcement is anticipated to last for a few days.
Although ICE directed inquiries to the Trump transition team, neither agency has commented on the matter. Similar operations were reportedly scheduled for New York, Miami, and Chicago, with the latter perhaps holding a week-long operation with hundreds of agents.
In an interview with NBC News on Saturday, Trump reaffirmed his campaign promise to prioritize mass deportations. Although he would not say where the procedures will take place or when, he said, “It will begin very quickly.” The criminals must be removed from our nation.
Homan said in an interview with Fox News that “targeted enforcement operations” will concentrate on deporting those who are in the US illegally and had deportation orders in place. Homan said that ICE has found about 700,000 people in the country who meet these requirements.
“From day one, President Trump has been clear,” Homan stated. “He will conduct the deportation operation and secure the border.” In order to protect officer safety, he further underlined that every target had been carefully chosen.
Sanctuary cities, which have promised not to use local resources to assist federal immigration enforcement, are certain to raise strong opposition to the raids. Homan blasted these regulations, claiming that they endanger public safety by reintegrating potentially dangerous people into society.
Homan stated that “ICE officers are forced into communities by sanctuary city policies, which raises the risk for everyone involved.” While urging local authorities to assist with the raids, he made it apparent that the operations would go on in spite of any opposition from the community.
Whether they assist us or not, we will accomplish this. “They won’t stop us,” he continued.
How and when the planned immigration raids take place will be greatly influenced by how the Trump administration handles the leaked information as it gets ready to take office on Monday.
Cities are preparing for action as the country watches to see how Trump’s pledge of quick deportations will be carried out in the days ahead.
