Lufthansa and other airlines are cautiously resuming flights to the Middle East
After Israel and Hamas reached a truce agreement, Wizz Air resumed its London to Tel Aviv route on Thursday, while Germany’s Lufthansa Group (LHAG.DE) said that it will resume flights to and from Tel Aviv in Israel starting on February 1.
With fighting raging throughout the Middle East, many Western airlines have canceled flights to large areas of the region in recent months, including Tel Aviv and Beirut. A concern of unintentionally being caught in drone or missile warfare also caused airlines to steer clear of Iranian and Iraqi airspace.
On Thursday, Wizz Air (WIZZ.L) reopened flights from London Luton airport to Amman, Jordan, and opened a new tab.
When Lufthansa decided to start operating flights to Tel Aviv again, it included the following airlines: Brussels Airlines, Eurowings, Austrian Airlines, and Swiss.
Before the ceasefire agreement was announced last week, Ryanair (RYA.I), opens new tab, stated in an interview with Reuters that it hoped to operate a full summer schedule to and from Ben Gurion airport in Tel Aviv.
With three weekly flights, Turkish Airlines (THYAO.IS) announced that it would begin flights to Damascus, the Syrian capital, on January 23 following the overthrow of the Assad administration.
WARNING RETURN
However, they stated that before fully reentering the zone, airlines continue to exercise caution and observation.
The British airline EasyJet (EZJ.L) told Reuters that it was happy to hear of the ceasefire in Gaza and would be reviewing its preparations in the days ahead.
According to the newly opened page, Air France-KLM (AIRF.PA) has suspended its flights between Paris and Beirut until January 31 and its operations to and from Tel Aviv until January 24.
An evaluation of the situation on the ground will determine when the activities continue, the statement stated.
According to the statement, Lufthansa would not operate flights to Beirut, Lebanon, until February 28 and suspended flights to and from Tehran until February 14.
