UK poll indicates that the right-wing Reform Party is in a close second place to the Labour Party
The right-wing Reform UK, led by Brexit campaigner Nigel Farage, is only one percentage point behind the ruling Labor Party as the second most popular political party in Britain, according to an opinion survey released on Tuesday.
Six months after Labor’s overwhelming election win, and with next vote not expected until 2029, YouGov polls indicated that 26% of British voters would support Labor and 25% would support Reform UK in a general election tomorrow. Those on 22% were the Conservatives.
According to the survey, which is YouGov’s first since the July 4 election, Reform, which garnered 14% of the vote the previous summer, is growing in favor among Conservatives and, to a lesser degree, Keir Starmer’s Labor Party.
Despite having just five members in the 650-seat British parliament, Farage’s Reform is viewed as a populist threat to the conservative and Labor-dominated British system after garnering over 4 million votes nationwide.
Voters’ resentment of the 14-year Conservative administration helped propel Starmer’s Labor into power, but it has already seen several setbacks, such as the backlash against politicians taking freebies and the consequences of a poorly accepted tax-raising budget.
According to a YouGov survey conducted over the course of two days among 2,279 respondents, only 54% of Labor voters stated they would cast another ballot.
The Tesla CEO has withdrawn his support for Farage, but Elon Musk, a major friend of U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, does advocate reform.
Musk has also backed the right-wing, anti-immigration AfD party in Germany in advance of the country’s February national elections.
