Rigobert Song has been appointed as the new coach of the Central African Republic

The sports ministry of the Central African Republic announced on Tuesday that Rigobert Song, a former coach and captain of Cameroon, had been hired to lead the national squad, though no terms were disclosed.

Song, 48, who coached the Indomitable Lions to the 2022 championships in Qatar after playing as a central defender for his nation at four World Cups, replaces Swiss coach Raoul Savoy, who was sacked in October after the team’s failed Africa Cup of Nations qualification campaign.

However, they are still in the running to qualify for the World Cup, and they will play Mali and Madagascar at home in March.

With four points from their first four games, the Central African Republic is five points behind Ghana and Comoros, the two co-leaders in Group I.

During the most recent World Cup, Song, who had stints at Liverpool, West Ham United, Racing Lens, and Galatasaray, got into a fight with Andre Onana, which caused the goalie to leave the competition in Qatar.
