MAGA Social Media Accounts Falsely Accuse Black Men of Looting While They Are Trying to Save Property from Fires
Black folks escaping the fatal flames in Los Angeles are being singled out for prejudice and potential profiling due to a phony looting story that has gone viral online.
The incident started after a video of multiple Black males removing furniture and other belongings from their homes as the fire threatened their neighborhood was posted on the Chingon Conservative Instagram page. However, the image clip was published by the MAGA-inspired page, which has more than 49,000 followers, and the men were accused of stealing. The video quickly made its way to Twitter, where a number of other bigoted accounts retweeted it.
Fortunately, a different perspective of the TV broadcast shows the homeowner discussing with news teams the removal of her belongings from her house in order to preserve what she could. Breaking 911, a well-known news website, also informed its one million+ Twitter followers about the Black looters. However, following a barrage of criticism, they also removed the video.
Neither of these pages apologized for disseminating the repulsive rhetoric, even though it was clearly false. Ebro used his Instagram account to draw attention to the issue.
He wrote in the video’s title, “The defamation of Black people can’t even stop for a tragedy.”
At least 20 people have been arrested for looting, according to officials, although this is a minor problem in comparison to what the neighborhood is currently dealing with. Eleven people have been killed in the Los Angeles region fire, which has destroyed hundreds of homes and other buildings.
