Tesla is recalling approximately 239,000 vehicles due to a problem with the rear-view camera
Tesla (TSLA.O) announced on Friday that it is recalling approximately 239,000 vehicles due to a problem that may prevent the rear-view camera from displaying an image. This issue can be addressed with an over-the-air software update.
The recent development follows the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s initiation of an investigation into 2.6 million Tesla vehicles in the U.S., prompted by reports of crashes linked to a feature enabling users to operate their cars remotely.
The automaker stated that in a limited number of affected vehicles, a reverse current may arise during the vehicle’s power-up process, potentially leading to a short circuit on the car’s computer board and causing the rear-view camera to become inoperative.
Tesla announced that it will locate any vehicles affected by a circuit board issue and will replace the car’s computer at no cost to the owners.
The automaker initiated an investigation following the observation of “an increase in car computer replacements” associated with short circuit problems in November.
The investigation revealed that a particular combination of software and hardware setups, combined with lower temperatures, could elevate reverse current, which might lead to a short circuit in power components.
Tesla announced that the Model 3, Model S, and Model X vehicles in production have been equipped with a different variant of the car computer following December 16 to address the issue.
The problem impacts Model 3 and Model S vehicles from 2024-25, as well as Model X and Model Y from 2023-25.
Tesla experienced the highest number of recalls in the U.S., impacting 5.1 million vehicles; however, all concerns can be resolved via a software update, according to a report by recall management firm Bizzycar.
Last year, advanced vehicle technologies resulted in a significant increase in electrical system recalls, impacting 6.3 million vehicles in 2024, as stated in the report.
