Tanzania will build inland container facilities to reduce the backlog of freight

In order to alleviate traffic congestion brought on by large cargo trucks delivering products to landlocked East African Community (EAC) member states, Tanzanian authorities have decided to build inland container terminals, or ICDs.

Makame Mbarawa, the minister of transportation, stated on Wednesday that the project was designed to reduce the traffic of containers being transported by trucks from Tanga Port to landlocked east African nations such as Rwanda, Burundi, and Uganda.

Mbarawa told reporters in the northern city of Arusha, ahead of the 73rd Airports Council International Africa Board and Committee Meeting, that the ICDs will hold cargo, including rail-transported containers, allowing for easier transit to EAC member states and lowering traffic congestion caused by cargo trucks.

The conference is scheduled for April 24–30 in Arusha and is anticipated to attract over 300 attendees from over 40 African nations and international organizations that oversee more than 265 airports worldwide.

He stated that the conference, which has as its topic “Towards a Greener Future: Sustainable Air Transport and Tourism for Economic Prosperity,” will concentrate on environmental responsibility, safety, and sustainability in air travel.
