A British court has decided that Marinakis’ libel suit against his Greek rival can proceed

London’s High Court decided on Friday that Evangelos Marinakis, the owner of Nottingham Forest, a soccer team in the English Premier League, can proceed with his libel case against a Greek rival for allegedly engaging in a smear campaign.

Last year, the Greek shipping tycoon Marinakis filed a lawsuit against Irini Karipidis, the chair of Aris Thessaloniki, a member of the Greek Super League.

According to him, Karipidis is the creator of a website that claims Marinakis violated sanctions by shipping Russian oil, smuggling drugs, and rigging matches—all of which Marinakis vehemently disputes.

Karipidis, on the other hand, claims that she has “a clear defense of truth” against the libel complaint and has requested that the court reverse the authorization to serve her outside of England.

In a written decision, Judge Richard Spearman denied the application, stating that Marinakis’ case may move forward.
