Report: Mike McCarthy’s request is refused; the Bears will interview Pete Carroll

The Chicago Bears will meet with veteran NFL coach Pete Carroll on Thursday after being turned down for an interview with Dallas Cowboys coach Mike McCarthy for their head coaching position, according to two ESPN stories on Tuesday.

Carroll, 73, is the Seahawks’ most successful coach with 137 victories, including a Super Bowl victory during his 14-year career. He also set team records for the most victories (10), and postseason appearances (10). After resigning after the 2023 season, Carroll was an adviser this season.

Carroll’s NFL coaching record is 170-120-1. He previously coached the New York Jets (1994) and the New England Patriots (1997-99).

He was a standout in the collegiate levels, ending with a 97-19 record and earning two national titles at Southern California over his nine-year career. Only three coaches have won both a collegiate national title and a Super Bowl, including Carroll.

McCarthy’s contract ends on Wednesday, and the Cowboys will have the only right to negotiate with him until January 14.

McCarthy, 61, finished his sixth season as head coach, although Dallas finished 7-10 and missed the playoffs. He has a 49-35 regular season record and a 1-3 playoff record.

McCarthy has stated that he wants to stay with Dallas despite missing the playoffs for the first time since his rookie campaign in 2020. He will speak with owner Jerry Jones this week.

Several current NFL assistants have received official inquiries from the Bears to interview.
