Trump Jr. goes to Greenland after his father expresses interest in the island again
Shortly after his father, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump, reaffirmed his interest in the resource-rich Arctic island, Donald Trump Jr. landed in Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, for a private visit on Tuesday.
At around 1250 GMT, Trump Jr. landed aboard his father’s own aircraft, the “Trump Force One,” according to flight monitoring websites and a webcast from Nuuk airport.
No contacts with government officials were planned for the four to five-hour visit to a cold, snow-covered Nuuk, a local official told Reuters.
“No, I am not buying Greenland,” Trump Jr. stated in reference to his father’s recent remarks during a podcast on Monday. “Funny enough, I’m actually going on a very long personal day trip to Greenland.”
Nuuk, the capital of Greenland, an independent region of Denmark, is located closer to New York than Copenhagen, the Danish capital, and is geographically a part of North America.
On his social media network Truth Social, President-elect Trump lauded the island on Monday and pledged to “MAKE GREENLAND GREAT AGAIN!”
“Greenland is an incredible place, and the people will benefit tremendously if, and when, it becomes part of our Nation,” he stated.
According to Trump, his son was traveling to Greenland to witness “some of the most magnificent areas and sights.”
Trump canceled a planned trip to Denmark in 2019 after Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen rejected his proposal for the United States to buy Greenland.
Trump, who becomes office on January 20, has hinted that he will pursue a foreign policy free from diplomatic pretensions. Last month, he threatened to seize control of the Panama Canal and declared that American sovereignty over Greenland is a “absolute necessity.”
has passed away at age 96. The National Rally, Marine Le Pen’s daughter’s political organization, announced his death.
Relationships between Denmark, a key NATO ally, and Greenland have deteriorated recently as a result of wrongdoing by Denmark, the former colonial ruler.
The island is not for sale, according to Greenland Prime Minister Mute Egede, who intensified calls for independence from Denmark in his New Year’s speech.
On Tuesday, Danish Prime Minister Frederiksen told TV2 that “we need very close cooperation with the Americans.”
“On the other hand, I would like to encourage everyone to respect that the Greenlanders are a people, it is their country, and only Greenland can determine and define Greenland’s future,” she stated.
