Brazil announces that Indonesia has become a full member of the BRICS alliance

Indonesia is officially becoming a full member of BRICS, which is a club of major rising economies that also includes South Africa, China, India, and Russia, according to a statement released by the Brazilian government on Monday.

In order to support growing nations and advance the interests of the so-called Global South, Indonesia, the fourth most populous country in the world, has already stated its intention to join the group.

According to Brazil, which will be the bloc’s 2025 president, the member states unanimously agreed to Indonesia’s admission as part of an expansion drive that was first approved at the bloc’s 2023 Johannesburg summit.

The South American country pointed out that Indonesia’s petition was approved by the bloc in 2023, but the Asian nation requested to join after last year’s presidential election. In October, President Prabowo Subianto assumed office.

“Indonesia shares with the other members of the group support for the reform of global governance institutions and contributes positively to the deepening of cooperation in the Global South,” said the Brazilian government.

Egypt, Ethiopia, Iran, and the United Arab Emirates are also members of the BRICS organization.
