Argentina Files ICC Complaint Regarding Security Officer’s Detention in Venezuela
Tensions have escalated amid allegations of forced abduction after Argentina launched an ICC case against Venezuela over a detained officer.
The government of Argentina declared on Thursday that it has lodged a case against Venezuela before the International Criminal Court (ICC), alleging that Venezuela was responsible for the “forced disappearance” of Nahuel Gallo, an Argentine gendarmerie officer.
Last month, Gallo was arrested in Venezuela after traveling from Colombia to see relatives. Argentina has called for his immediate release, but Venezuelan officials say he is being held lawfully and is being investigated for possible ties to a group that plans “terrorist” and destabilizing activities.
Attorney General Tarek Saab of Venezuela told Reuters, “He has not vanished.” “He is being held and processed by the appropriate court.”
Since Argentina’s far-right libertarian president, Javier Milei, took office in late 2023, tensions between the two South American countries have been tense, and the complaint has made them even more so. After Venezuela’s disputed July presidential election, in which incumbent socialist President Nicolás Maduro won despite claims of irregularities, relations further deteriorated.
In a Telegram post, Venezuelan Foreign Minister Yvan Gil highlighted the diplomatic divide by calling Argentina’s action a “pitiful spectacle.”
The foreign ministry of Argentina reaffirmed its determination to secure Gallo’s release and promised to use “all legal and diplomatic resources” to defend his rights. Argentina’s most recent attempt to take the matter to a higher level on the global scene is represented by the complaint to the ICC.
With wider ramifications for South American regional diplomacy, the case continues to be a hot spot in the already shaky ties between Buenos Aires and Caracas.
