Off Tunisia, two migrant boats sink, killing at least 27 people and saving many more

Following the sinking of two boats they were trying to use to cross the Mediterranean, the bodies of 27 African migrants were retrieved by Tunisia’s coast guard, the national guard announced Thursday.

The boats capsized in waters around Sfax, a popular departure point for African migrants.

The coast guard of Tunisia retrieved the dead of over thirty other migrants in two other incidents last month after their boat capsized while they were traveling to Europe.

The Coast Guard rescued 87 individuals who were in the same two boats that sank off Sfax, the National Guard announced Thursday.

Amidst an unparalleled migration crisis, Tunisia has supplanted Libya as the primary departure point for individuals from other parts of Africa who are looking to migrate to Europe in search of a better life.
