McCarthy is expected to assume the position in Kenya
According to reports, Benni McCarthy, the former coach of Manchester United, is on the brink of transitioning to international management. He is being considered for the position of Kenyan manager.
The Bafana Bafana legend expressed his desire to return to the dugout earlier this month after disclosing that he had been interviewed by three unnamed Major Soccer League (MLS) clubs.
Before accepting Erik ten Hag’s invitation to join his administrative staff at Old Trafford for the 2022-23 campaign, McCarthy made an impression during his tenures at Cape Town City and AmaZulu.
Before departing the club in June 2024, the 47-year-old served as a striker coach at United for two seasons. He is currently poised to attempt his hand at international management.
Engin Firat’s resignation on December 11 was precipitated by salary arrears. The Harambee Stars are currently in search of a new head coach, and it is believed that newly-elected Football Kenya Federation (FKF) president Hussein Mohammed has selected McCarthy.
Co-hosting the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) with Tanzania and Uganda, Kenya is also preparing to host the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Firat was unsuccessful in leading the national team to the 2025 African showpiece in Morocco. McCarthy will be responsible for competing against Ivory Coast and Gabon for a place at the 2026 World Cup, where they are presently ranked fourth in Group F of the qualifying tournament.
