Jennifer Crumbley, the mother of the convicted Oxford School Shooter, requests that the judge free her from prison
As her appeals process progresses, Jennifer Crumbley, the mother of the Oxford High School shooter, has asked a Michigan judge to free her from jail. Through her lawyer, Crumbley, who was found guilty on four counts of involuntary manslaughter, said that it would be “grossly unfair and unjust” to keep her behind bars while the appeals process took its time.
Her then-15-year-old son, Ethan Crumbley, carried out the fatal shot on November 30, 2021, which led to the conviction. Four students—Tate Myre, 16, Justin Shilling, 16, Hana St. Juliana, 14, and Madisyn Baldwin, 17—were killed in the incident, while seven others were injured. The Crumbleys were the first parents in American history to be found guilty of their child’s mass shooting.
Michael Dezsi, Crumbley’s lawyer, filed the application in Oakland County Circuit Court, claiming that Crumbley is not a flight risk or a public hazard. He denounced the prosecution for what he called “unlawful incarceration” and called the manslaughter allegations “overreach.”
Dezsi stated, “Mrs. Crumbley was convicted for her own actions, not the intentional acts of her son,” and that it is essentially unfair to keep her behind bars while she goes through an appeals process that might take years.
David Williams, the chief assistant prosecutor for Oakland County, retaliated, saying that Jennifer Crumbley’s acts were a direct cause of the Oxford High School massacre. “A jury of her peers tried Jennifer Crumbley for her own actions and inactions leading up to the shooting,” Williams stated. “The jury unanimously found the defendant guilty after considering a substantial amount of evidence.”
Following a well-publicized trial in which prosecutors detailed how she and her husband, James Crumbley, disregarded warning signs in Ethan’s conduct prior to the shooting, Jennifer Crumbley was sentenced. The couple met with school officials on the morning of the assault to discuss the graphic drawings that Ethan had made, but they left for work after the discussion. Ethan started shooting in the school hallways a few hours later.
Both Jennifer Crumbley and her husband were given jail terms ranging from 10 to 15 years. Both parents came under fire for doing little to address their son’s obvious need for assistance.
Crumbley asked for a fresh trial or the reversal of her conviction earlier this month.
