Barca’s attempt to register Olmo was unsuccessful
In the second part of the 2024–25 La Liga season, Barcelona tried to sign Dani Olmo and Pau Victor, but their court petition for a preventive registration step was rejected.
The club’s plea to register the two players was turned down by Barcelona’s Commercial Court 10 on Friday, December 27, according to The Athletic.
Consequently, as of January 1, neither player is physically present to participate.
Barca was able to hire Olmo and Victor on a temporary basis as they continued to look for alternative sources of money prior to January since La Liga only allowed their registration for the first half of the season.
They have yet to make major changes, and their four-month permits expire on December 31.
The Juzgado de Primera Instancia, the magistrate court, will now hear Barcelona’s further appeal on December 30, one day before to Tuesday’s deadline.
In a statement praising Friday’s ruling, La Liga said the league’s “established budgetary balance rules implementing the powers conferred upon it by law” were the foundation for the ruling.
“Applying the rules in the same way to all clubs and thus avoiding potentially seriously altering the equal conditions of the competition rules” is vital, the league said.
Even when Barca announced a new sponsorship deal with Nike, the two players were unable to register.
According to an article in The Athletic on December 10, Barcelona was considering selling VIP boxes at the newly refurbished Camp Nou in 20-year leases in an effort to sign first-team squad players in January.
Sources close to Olmo, who spoke on condition of anonymity due to the secret nature of the process, said he remains committed to his hometown club and believes the situation will be resolved.
In 17 games this season, Victor has only scored twice as a starter. Olmo, who joined from RB Leipzig in the summer for an estimated €60 million (£50 million; $63 million), has scored six goals in 15 games. Barcelona’s persistent injuries provided a remedy, but their inability to pay La Liga’s salary ceiling had made it difficult for them to recruit fresh players in the summer.
