In Mozambique, the mortality toll from Cyclone Chido has increased to 94, according to AFP

AFP, citing the country’s disaster management agency, reported on Sunday that the mortality toll from Cyclone Chido in Mozambique has reached 94.

The cyclone had made landfall in northern Mozambique a week ago, and the death toll was set at 73 by Mozambique’s institute for natural disasters on Thursday.

Mayotte, an archipelago in the Indian Ocean, was the most severely affected by the cyclone. Only 35 fatalities from Chido have been confirmed by officials in Mayotte, one of France’s poorest overseas territories. However, some have expressed concern that thousands of individuals may have been slain.

On Wednesday, Olamide Harrison, the resident representative of the International Monetary Fund in Mozambique, stated that the country’s economic growth in 2024 is likely to be revised downward from the previous forecast of 4.3%. This is due to the impact of the cyclone and post-election civil disorder.

In October, the presidential election was proclaimed by the ruling party of Mozambique, Frelimo, to be won by Daniel Chapo.
