Mother of Luigi Mangione said she “could see him” killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson
Luigi Mangione’s mother said she wasn’t shocked when her son was charged with killing UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
New York police said Tuesday that Mangione’s mother, Kathleen, told police two days before he was arrested that she “could see him” killing Thompson. Her scary comment came at the same time that Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg announced a charge for first-degree murder, calling the death on December 4th an act of terrorism.
Chief of Detectives for the NYPD Joseph Kenny said that Kathleen had reported Mangione missing in November. Police in San Francisco got a tip that connected the missing man to a person who could be seen grinning on security video from a hostel. When asked on December 7, Kathleen wouldn’t say for sure that it was her boy, but she did say, “It might be something she could see him doing.” Mangione was caught with a 9 mm “ghost gun,” a silencer, and fake IDs at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, on December 9.
The police say Mangione surprised Thompson in Midtown Manhattan and fired several shots at him. Thompson, who was 50 years old, died soon after in the hospital. A three-page manifesto that slams the health insurance business and shell casings with words like “deny” and “depose” written on them are used as proof. His fingerprints were found at the crime scene.
The murder was planned and meant to “sow terror” on a busy Midtown morning, according to the prosecutors. Mangione, who was said to be angry at big business, is fighting transfer to New York, where he faces more serious murder charges. He is still in jail in Pennsylvania on different charges.
