The motive of the teen girl in the Wisconsin Christian school shooting is unknown

On Tuesday, police in Wisconsin were interrogating classmates and family members and looking through a 15-year-old girl’s internet activity to find out what motivated her to shoot a teacher and another student in a classroom at her private Christian school before killing herself.

Police have named the shooter as Natalie Rupnow, also known as Samantha, who attended the Abundant Life Christian School in the state capital of Madison, Wisconsin.

Compared to male assailants, females are much less likely to carry out mass shootings and school shootings.

Just 107 of the 2,610 shootings since 1966 that the K-12 School Shooting Database has tracked—opens new tab in which the shooter’s gender is known—were committed by female suspects. Studies reveal that women are responsible for only around 3% of all mass shootings in the United States.

It is yet unknown what motivated the attack. Investigators are examining internet posts and a potential manifesto that the gunman may have left behind, Madison Police Chief Shon Barnes said CNN on Tuesday.

“We have been made aware of a manifesto, if you want to call it that, or some type of letter that’s been posted by someone who alleged to be her friend,” Barnes continued.

Barnes stated that in order to determine whether she and another person exchanged any messages, authorities are also looking through her computer and cell phone. Investigators are also seeking to determine whether the 15-year-old’s parents were careless and how she got a gun.

“That’s a question that we’ll have to answer with our district attorney’s office,” Barnes replied. “But at this time, that does not appear to be the case.”

The Madison street where the shooter lived has been verified by police. According to internet records, a Jeff Rupnow lives on the same street, and pictures of his newborn daughter Natalie Lynn from 2009—15 years ago—can be found on his Madison Facebook site.

The August cover photo of Rupnow purports to show a teenage girl at a neighborhood club, trap shooting with a shotgun. Jeff Rupnow has posted a remark on the website stating that he and his child joined the club in the spring and “have been loving all every second of it.”

Rupnow was not available for comment.

Numerous victims sustained less severe injuries, but two students were critically injured and in danger of dying.

According to the K-12 School Shooting Database, 322 school shootings occurred this year, making them almost everyday in the US. After last year’s 349, that is the second-highest total in any year since 1966.

According to polls, American voters want more stringent background checks for gun purchases, temporary restrictions on those in emergency situations, and safer storage regulations for firearms in households with children. Political leaders, however, have mostly refrained from taking action, pointing to the American constitution’s guarantee of gun ownership.
