Israel accuses Ireland of “extreme anti-Israel policies” and closes its embassy in Dublin
Ireland’s “extreme anti-Israel policies” are the reason Israel closed its embassy in Dublin.
Israel accused the Dublin administration of implementing “extreme anti-Israel policies” when it announced on Sunday that it was closing its embassy in Ireland.
The two countries’ diplomatic ties have further deteriorated as a result of the decision.
After Ireland took a number of actions, such as recognizing a Palestinian state and endorsing an International Court of Justice (ICJ) complaint accusing Israel of “genocide” in Gaza, tensions have increased.
Ireland has also been outspoken in its criticism of Israel’s military response to the October 7, 2023, Hamas strikes that set off the current conflict in Gaza.
According to a statement from the Israeli foreign ministry, “the decision to close Israel’s embassy in Dublin was made in light of the extreme anti-Israel policies of the Irish government.”
Gideon Saar, the foreign minister, went into further detail, accusing Ireland of using double standards and demonizing Israel by “actions and antisemitic rhetoric.” Saar declared, “Ireland has crossed every red line in its relations with Israel.”
Following an arrest warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris stated in November that authorities would hold Netanyahu if he traveled to Ireland. Between October 8, 2023, and May 20, 2024, “crimes against humanity and war crimes” occurred in Gaza, according to the warrant.
Saar stated, “We will modify Israel’s diplomatic network of missions while taking into account the diplomatic actions of various countries toward Israel.”
By acknowledging Palestine as a sovereign state and designating a full-time Palestinian ambassador, Ireland has bolstered its support for the region. Israel responded to similar recognitions by Slovenia, Norway, and Spain in May 2024 with retaliatory actions.
Irish Prime Minister Simon Harris referred to Israel’s action as “deeply regrettable” and denied any anti-Israel prejudice. He wrote on X, “Ireland is pro-peace, pro-human rights, and pro-international law.”
