Nairobi County Will Honor E-Sir With Road Dedication: South C’s Finest
Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has announced intentions to rename a road in South C, the artist’s hometown, in honor of the late Kapuka music icon E-Sir.
Governor Sakaja made the news while highlighting the transformational potential of Kenya’s entertainment sector at the Jamhuri Day celebrations held at Uhuru Gardens.
During his speech, Governor Sakaja praised the notable advancements made by the local music industry, especially in Nairobi, which has emerged as a center for the cultivation of talent and a draw for international performers. He underlined how the creative sector has given many young people job chances in addition to raising the city’s cultural prominence.
As a nation, we are dedicated to honoring the artists who have contributed to Kenya’s rich cultural legacy. Generations have been inspired by the music of pioneer E-Sir. Sakaja said, “One of the roads in South C, where his journey started, will be renamed in his honor.”
He also gave credit to Habib, E-Sir’s brother, who played at the ceremony, continuing the artist’s musical heritage.
In order to honor the memories of the slain urban music hero and celebrate his artistic genius, rapper Nameless stated in an interview with The Sauce in 2022 that he has initiated a petition to have a road named for his late Ogopa DJs label member.
E-Sir, who was born Issah Mmari Wangui, is still one of Kenya’s most well-known performers and is well-known for classic songs like Boomba Train and Hamunitishi. Although his impressive career was cut short by his untimely death in a car accident in 2003, his music is still very much a part of Kenyan mainstream culture.
A broader Nairobi County campaign to celebrate those who have made a lasting impact on Kenya’s cultural and social scene includes the planned renaming of a South C route.
