Greece will purchase drones from the US and artillery systems from Israel, according military officials
According to two sources on Friday, Greece is in advanced negotiations to purchase 36 PULS rocket artillery systems from Israel as part of its efforts to modernize its military.
The 600–700 million euro ($630–735 million) agreement talks are taking place while the nations negotiate Israel selling Greece a two-billion euro anti-aircraft and missile defense dome.
According to the officials, in the first quarter of 2025, the Greek government will present the agreement for ratification to a parliamentary committee.
In addition to purchasing up to 40 new F-35 fighter jets from the United States and four frigates from France, Athens has devised a multibillion dollar, ten-year purchasing plan.
According to the officials, the PULS system, which is manufactured by Israel’s Elbit (ESLT.TA), opens a new tab and has a range of up to 300 km (190 miles). Component construction in Greece is another aspect of the agreement.
One of the individuals went on to say that the purchase of US-made Switchblade drones from AeroVironment (AVAV.O) was approved by KYSEA, the nation’s top defense and foreign affairs decision-making body, on Friday.
According to a second official, the majority of the new artillery systems would defend Greece’s northeastern borders with Turkey and its Aegean islands.
NATO members Greece and Turkey have long been at odds over problems such as energy resources, flights over the Aegean, the ethnically divided island of Cyprus, and where their continental shelf begin and stop.
$1 is equivalent to 0.9535 euros.
