Argentina’s Milei holds a right-wing gathering with the Bolsonaro clan and Trump loyalists

Argentina’s libertarian president, Javier Milei, who is becoming more and more of a symbol of free markets and right-wing politics, is holding a meeting in Buenos Aires on Wednesday with supporters of Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro and U.S. President-elect Donald Trump.

Encouraged by Trump’s election victory, Milei is launching the Conservative Action Political Conference, where Bolsonaro and Trump’s daughter-in-law Lara Trump are scheduled to speak. Bolsonaro will do so by video.

Eduardo, Bolsonaro’s son, is also scheduled to speak.

Milei danced with Lara, the wife of Eric Trump and co-chair of the Republican National Convention, who blasted the spread of socialism during the inaugural banquet.

“There is a threat to the West… The blustery economist and relative political newcomer declared, “We must oppose regulation, abandon the notion of market failure, and halt the advancement of the murderous (abortion) agenda. We must not allow socialism to advance.”

“We won’t yield in the fight for freedom.”

There are several right-wing names on the guest list. Alongside politicians like the leader of the far-right Spanish party Vox, U.S. media figures like Steve Bannon, Kari Lake, and Ben Shapiro will participate in person or via video.

Since winning a surprise election last year during a terrible economic downturn that sent many people away from the mainstream political parties, Milei’s profile has grown. He has used budget cuts to reverse a large deficit and curb unchecked inflation, but these measures have hampered economic growth and increased poverty.

Trump and the libertarian, who used a chainsaw during his campaign to demonstrate his projected austerity, are philosophically similar even if they come from different economic backgrounds. Trump referred to Milei as his “favorite president” during their recent visit to the US.
